Change of watch has finally arrived to the pilot house!

The time has finally arrived to be able to sit at the helm and enjoy the view! The last few months since Tracy's departure have been a whirlwind of bricks falling from the sky, parking lots slipping into the sea, endless phone calls, meetings and many hats to wear. Oh the joys of a General Manager at a urban marina, they call this personal growth. I would like to take this opportunity and give many thanks to my wonderful team of employees, to include our NEW Marina Manager, Jesse Sherwood. With all their dedication, hard work and much Patience, they made this transition appear to be seamless, my drogue in turbulent seas. Our tenants have been most gracious as well in excepting the change in command and all the uncertainties that go along with it, thank you.

One of the first items that landed on my desk, my lap and almost squarely on my head is, the Murry Morgan Bridge project and all things associated. I will update you through this blog as info is made known to me. We will post on bulletin boards and also communicate via our facebook and email contact list. It is apparent after the past month of many complaints and concern for personal safety and noise, they have listened. The noise has toned down a bit, they are building a separate containment system for the dust, the crew yelling should have ceased completely. They have hired an outside agency, Integrity Safety Services, to monitor the air quality, noise levels and take periodic dust samples to the labs, the request was made for this by our tenants 9/1/11 at our public meeting and they responded by 9/6/11, with a weekend and holiday in between. I feel confident that this was a strong first step, we will have a follow up meeting, as soon as I have a date we will post.

Once again, thank you all, I look forward to working with everyone and for everyone, my door is always open, you will find me under the pile! :)

Last Aloha From the Pilot House - June/July 2011

I am sorry to say that this will be one of my last blog updates. I have accepted a position at the Port of Seattle to oversee Shilshole, Bell Harbor, and Harbor Island Marinas. My last day will be July 18th.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your help and support over the last nine years. When I first arrived at the marina there were three people working here and all the marina keys were in one shoebox. It's hard to believe where the marina is at now compared to 2002. We went through and accomplished so many things not just as a marina business, but as a marina community.

We have been in constant transition since 2001 trying to grow and maintain a better product than what we initially found. I am grateful for your patience and understanding during my years at the Foss Harbor Marina. It is my hope that the marina continues to grow and thrive.

At this time, I am not sure who will be replacing me. Regardless, I hope you show them as much patience and kindness as you have shown me over the years.

I will miss you, but I'm sure you will still see me every once in a while down here; Or you are always welcome to stop by the Shilshole Marina Office.

11th Street Bridge Work

For those tenants moored around the 11th St. Bridge: Please be advised they will be working with the debris nets next week between Tuesday and Thursday. There is a possibility that debris may fall out of the nets during that time. Please take care when walking in areas around and under the bridge. Sections of dock may be closed during this time for your safety. The sun is out and things are starting to happen.

The kayaks are here along with the pedal boat and our stand-up surf paddlers! The tenant lounge now has carpeting, furniture, and a TV. We are still shopping for some chairs and a lamp, but you are welcome to start coming in and utilitizing this space. Pressure-washing has started on the locker buildings and will continue through the weekend. Once the buildings are clean and the weather cooperates, the painters will start painting the northern most locker building. This will be a test building to sample the colors that the owners have chosen.The fuel dock is now exclusively selling ValvTect fuel and we now have ethanol-free unleaded fuel!!!

"Salty Dock Day" is coming fast!! It's happening June 11th starting at 10am. We have the following activities already scheduled:

Foss Harbor Summer Season Goes Hollywood

The Foss Harbor Marina is excited to announce a new summer feature at their Tacoma marina. Free outdoor movies will be shown on a 12’ inflatable screen every other Saturday starting on June 11th and running through September 3rd, 2011. All tenants including guest tenants will be allowed to participate in this bi-monthly event. Should there be inclement weather; the movie will be moved indoors. The marina has also added a new popcorn machine in preparation for its cinematic debut. This summer the theme for the movies will be maritime-based. Due to licensing requirements, the marina is not allowed to publish actual titles that will be showing on these nights. However, tenants and guests may call and ask for the planned movie on a particular night. Movie nights are scheduled for June 11th, June 25th, July 9th, July 23rd, August 6th, August 20th, August 27th, and September 3rd. Happy Spring to all!

There is hope ahead!!! We've had a few days now without the liquid weather; if only we could turn up the heat a little faster.

In preparation for the upcoming warmer(?) season, we are making progress on several items that you might be interested in:

1.Tenant Lounge - The wall is in and painted. The carpet has been ripped up and we are on the schedule to have a new piece put in. Click has installed a cable hook-up for the 50' TV that we are getting. We have a kitchen table with chairs and we are currently searching for a couch and a couple of chairs for the area around the TV. We are also looking at changing some of the light fixtures. The room should be ready sometime in May.

2.Exterior Painting - Painting will most likely start in early May. They will be pressure-washing a building and then painting that building a day or so later. Some locker access may be termporarily impaired.

3.Kayaks - Kayaks, Stand-Up Paddlers, and a paddle boat should be arriving some time in mid-May and ready for rental shortly after. We will have hourly, two hour, daily, and weekly rates.

4."Salty Dock Days" will be on June 11th starting at 10am. We have the following activities already scheduled:

4.Esplanade rebuild - It looks like they will be doing the piling work for the esplanade next January. We are currently working out logistics for restroom & laundry room access as well as relocation for the utility runs.

5.Waterway Security - Lori is working with Coast Guard and contractors to see if we can qualify for a grant that will provide security cameras for the marina. These will not only serve to protect the marina, but also assist the Department of Homeland Security in keeping our waterways safe.

6. Movie Nights - We will be having 7 to 8 possible movie nights this summer. The movies will be on the hoist deck with a 12' screen. We will have popcorn available and will keep the store open later for goodies. Due to licensing requirements, the marina is not allowed to publish actual titles that will be showing on these nights. However, tenants and guests may call and ask for the planned movie on a particular night. The schedule will be:

June 25th - maritime title
July 9th - maritime title
July 23rd - maritime title
August 6th - maritime title
August 20th - maritime title

7. Municipal Dock Site Grant - I recently applied for a grant from the City of Tacoma for a large decorative banner to be hung from the Municipal Dock Site fence. Our goal is to try and discretely camouflage the decaying lot until such time as development takes place. If approved, we are looking to put pictures of the old Tacoma Waterfront on the banners to commemorate the history of the area.

8.Gate 2 Liveboards - It looks like we are finally getting our claim settled from the November 2010 storm. In our claim, I asked for partial compensation for our liveaboards that were on the affected docks and had to evacuate. I know it is not alot, but you will be receiving $40 credit on your account as soon as we receive the reimbursement.

9.Wine Club - I have been talking to some wine vendors about possibly creating a Foss Harbor Marina Wine Club. This would include a monthly tasting event as well as delivery of a couple bottles of wine per month. If you would be interested in this program/club, please let us know and we will begin planning.

Held on National Marina Day, “Salty Dock Days” will celebrate all the recreational opportunities marinas provide on the nation’s waterways by offering live music; food; boater education classes, speakers, and safety demonstrations; a Saturday Night outdoor movie (weather permitting); and visiting historic vessels. A special feature will be Foss Waterway Seaport’s opening of a new exhibit, an extensive collection of maritime artifacts from the legendary, nostalgic steamboat era on Puget Sound. Hello All,

As some of you know, I am back from my great Antartica adventure. I thought I would post a few pictures so that you could take a look at some of the beautiful scenery that was on display in the southern latitudes. Some are urging me to put together a program/talk about the trip. If I have the time, I might be able to share my experience as part of the festivities on Marina Day, June 11, 2011.

I hope you all are faring well and looking forward to the start of spring. I know I for one could use some warmer temperatures and sunny days.

It has taken me a while to catch-up with everything here at work. I don't think I'm quite there yet, but I am getting closer. I'm sure you are anxious to know about some of the things going on behind the scenes right now at the marina. We have several exciting things in the works.

Tenant Lounge - Alan and his handy helpers have started putting up the wall in the back section of the store. He has been putting up drywall all day today. After the wall is finished, we will be painting and then it will be on to the flooring. We have some new carpet left from our store remodel that we will be installing. After the space is finished, we hope to put in a couch, a table, a TV and whatever else we can think of.

Exterior Painting - It is still our intention to paint the upland buildings this spring. We haven't determined the exact color of this facelift.

Passport to Puget Sound Program - The 2011 Passport program has been launched. The bingo card has expanded from 16 squares to 25 squares with additional marinas now participating. There are five free spaces this year and you have the ability to get a wildcard sticker from Westmar Insurance that you will be able to put on any square of your choosing. The object is to visit as many marinas as possible on the card. Once you get one full line or a "Bingo", you win a free t-shirt. If you are one of the first 20 vessels to get a"blackout" , you may pick one of the twenty Grand Prizes worth $300-$500. Pick up your card now at the marina office and get your first stamp on the Foss Harbor Marina square.

The Tacoma Waterfront Association is having its annual fundraiser,"Celebrating the Waterfront" on April 19th from 4:30pm to 7pm at the Foss Waterway Seaport. The cost will be $50/person. There will be refreshments, Entertainment, and a raffle. The Tall Ship Adventurous will be open for free dock-side tours from 4pm to 6pm. For questions, call 253-272-5650. Kayaks - We are almost ready to order kayaks for our upcoming kayak rental program. We are also looking at standup surf paddlers and paddle boats.

Marina Day is on June 11, 2011 this year. We are combining forces with the Foss Waterway Seaport to create a brand new event called "Salty Dock Days". They will be premiering their brand new exhibit on the Mosquito Fleet. We plan on having entertainment, food, safety demonstrations, speakers, and hopefully an outdoor movie to top off the night. Let us know if you are interested in helping or have some ideas for the event.

Esplanade rebuild - you will probably start seeing engineers and surveyors on site designing the next section of the esplanade. The earliest start date for the actual constuctions was slated for this fall, but I think they are running a little behind schedule.

11th Street Bridge - The City will begin their 2 year remodeling project on the 11th Street Bridge this April. We will lose the parking under the bridge while the project is underway. There are building a new storm water drainage system that will filter down underneath the bridge where the current parking is.

Thea Foss Waterway Protection - I am currently working with a committe on the Tacoma Waterfront Association that is developing a plan to create a wave attenuator to help protect the waterway from storms, such as last Novembers. At this point in time, we are trying to find all of the potential stakeholders(USCG, Department of Ecology, WDFW, DNR, City of Tacoma,EPA, Tug & Barge traffic, ect...) so that we can properly plan. This is a long project and will take several years to come to fruition. If you are interested in such things, please contact me or the Tacoma Waterfront Association. They typically have meetings on the second Wednesday of the month @ 11:30am @ the Foss Waterway Seaport. The meeting for this April is cancelled in lieu of the fundraiser.

Seas 'N Greetings 'N Good Times

Hello there! Melynda here filling in for Captain Tracy. Seas 'N Greetings was held on December 18th at the fabulous Foss Waterway Seaport Museum. If you have never been there, you should definitely adventure down and check out whats on display, including a 1964 aquatic car and outboard engines ranging from the early 1900's to present. If this is the kind of thing that floats your boat, (ha) don't miss out.

As December draws to a close, I wanted to wish you all a wonderful New Year. Please be careful out there with the weather and the celebrations.

It looks like we may have some exciting things coming for 2011. The first of which is the completion of the laundry room remodel. We expect to have this completed sometime this next week. We are just waiting for the floor to be put in.

Late February, we should be close to installing 40' covered moorage on the south side of the boathouse dock. So for any of you out there who are interested, come in and put down a deposit to reserve one of the 8 slips that will be available. This covered moorage will have light-penetrating roof panels and thus more ambiant light in general.

We are also currently getting estimates for painting the storage lockers and the main marina building. We are really excited about making this happen because it will give the marina grounds a much needed facelift.

The Passport to Puget Sound program has been renewed for 2011. We will be meeting with all the involved marinas the first week in January to sort out all of the details.

After the lovely storm on November 22, 2010, I approached the Board of the Tacoma Waterfront Association about developing a plan for a breakwater or wave attenuator for the Thea Foss Waterway. They have agreed that the timing is right and will start forming a committtee to pursue this endeavor. This process will take some time, but it is something we need to begin now if we ever hope to provide more protection for the city's premier waterway. If you are interested in the Tacoma Waterfront Association, the next meeting is on Wednesday, January 12th @ 11:30am at the Foss Waterway Seaport.

Also, if you experienced the parking frenzy that occurred because of the Christmas running event a few weeks ago, please know that we have talked to the sponsors. They have been instructed to change their on-line parking maps and they will also notify us of their upcoming events. Their next run in this area will be on March 12, 2011.

You will not see me for much of January. I am headed to South America and will be taking a cruise around the Antarctic Peninsula, but you are in good hands with the marina staff. They care about you and they care about the marina.

As we all know, winter isn't over yet. Be prepared this month for possible water shut-offs if the temperatures should start dipping again.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! I'd like to wish you a wonderful holiday season and I even have a gift to kick off the festivities. We will once again be holding moorage rates to their current level. This will make it a tight stretch for the marina, but we realize that many of you are in the same boat, so to speak. The only increase will be a 2% raise on locker fees, which will amount to an additional $3.50 per month.

At some point in the future, we will have to increase our rates to keep up with expenses. I recently did a financial analysis and determined that for each dollar that is paid to the marina, we only get to keep twelve cents. This is definitely making it a challenge for us to fulfill our of goal of continually improving the marina.

Speaking of marina improvement, I have some good news. I recently ordered 6 new stacked washers/dryers for the laundry room. Within the next couple of weeks, we will be closing the laundry room to remodel and install these new units. In order to operate these additional machines, plumbing and and electrical work will be required. So, you can expect the laundry room to be closed for 1-2 weeks. I apologize for the inconvenience, but I think you will be happy with the improved facility.

Another item that has been occupying my time is the possibility of a snowy winter. With snow, one of my first concerns is the covered moorage docks. As you know, when the snow load increases on the roof, the dock freeboard starts to decrease. So, you may see the activation of our covered moorage snow plan this fall & winter. We have measured the current freeboard of all covered moorage docks. If the freeboard decreases by 4", we will ask the liveaboard tenants in covered moorage to move to open slips for their safety. After the liveaboards have been contacted, the remainder of covered moorage tenants will be notified. We will offer open slips to those tenants on a first come, first serve basis. If the freeboard further decreases by 5" and if it is safe to do so, we will attempt to remove some of the snow manually by sending an experienced employee onto the roof.

Our primary concern during inclement weather is the safety of our employees and our tenants. Our second priority is the protection of tenant and marina assets. Thus, there may be a time when we will need to cordon off sections of the marina for people's safety. This might include locking down entire gates. I don't see this happening, but it is always a possibility. Obviously, if the situation were to arise, our goal would be to get all Liveaboard vessels to an area in the marina where people have adequate access to their boat homes.

Please use extreme caution during snow and ice conditions. If at all possible, travel in pairs and limit your trips up and down the docks and ramps. Remind yourself where the safety ladders are on your dock should you accidentally slip into the water. Ice melt will be located in buckets by the ramps. We will also have extra snow shovels available to borrow if you need them. We will be as diligent as possible when it comes to snow and ice, but remember you are transiting the docks at your own risk.

If conditions merit, the water will be shut-off. When this happens, the fire department is notified of our condition. This requires that employees and security personnel keep a diligent eye out for fire issues. If there ever was a fire, the fire department has told us that they would be using their own equipment and would not use the hoses on the dock anyway. Please remember that you do have fire extinguishers available for your use as well. We do not shut-off the water to make it hard on our tenants. As a matter of fact, it takes a great deal of time to shut the water off and drain the lines. However, if we do not turn off the water, it results in multiple line breaks. This translates into the water being off for even a longer period of time. I am sorry if you are angered by this policy, but it gives the marina and the tenants the best outcome - no pipe replacement & quicker access to water when the temperatures go up. Predicting potential temperatures down on the waterfront is not an exact science and based on past experiences we would rather err on the side of caution.

When possible,we will run a hose from the main building down to the fuel dock for those who run out of water. It is best to always keep your water tanks as full as possible during the winter months just in case we have a cold snap.

I thank all of you for your cooperation and understanding. I'm sure in my place, you would come to similar conclusions. For those of you out there that feel you need to call the authorities to report our water status, please let me reiterate that this is already part of our process. You not only waste your time, but also our time that we could spend doing things on your behalf.

Greetings Foss Harbor Marina Tenants,

After hearing from several of you over the last month or so, I thought it might be helpful if I was able to communicate with all of you at least on a monthly basis. So, in an attempt to bond together more as a team, I will be updating you with blog articles titled, View From the Pilot House.

The first thing I would like to say is thank you. Thank you for choosing our marina. Thank you for being responsible boat owners. Thank you for helping us continually improve our marina community so that it is a place that we all want to be. You are all important to me and my main focus has always been trying to improve your experience at the marina.

Lately, I think many of you feel bombarded by various letters from the marina requesting that you follow certain Marina Rules and Regulations. I do apologize if these requests felt heavy-handed or dictatorial. I can assure you that they were not intended to be so. The intention was to create a marina that we can all enjoy with minimal conflicts. Sometimes, we all lose sight of the intended purpose of a request, especially if it is phrased in an unappealing manner. I have been guilty of that myself on several occasions.

I would like to take the opportunity to explain some of the requests that the marina has issued lately and explain why they are beneficial to the marina as a whole.

Liveaboard pump-out policy - We must track liveaboard pump-out compliance in order to fulfill our aquatic lands lease obligations with the Department of Natural Resources. The State of Washington actually owns the Aquatic Lands over which your vessel floats. If they are unable to see evidence of liveaboard pump-out compliance, they may take away our liveaboard privileges. It has been very difficult to try and get 100% compliance and we've been trying for over 8 years. We've tried the soft approach, the please please approach, and nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, in order to change the former status-quo, there has to be consequences for people to change their behaviors. I am aware that there are a lot you who have always done the right thing and I am grateful for your leadership in this area. We have set-up the standard protocol for pumping-out twice per month, feeling that this was a reasonable number for most liveaboards. However, it does not mean that we won't adapt to an individual boat's particular pump-out schedule. If you have a large tank with only one person, then maybe one pump-out per month is fine. We just need to verify the details and document for the satisfaction of the DNR. We are not trying to be heavy-handed, but as I stated above, we have tried for eight years to gain 100% compliance and for some reason the message isn't getting through to all parties. We'd appreciate all of your help in encouraging others to comply.

Personal Items on Finger Piers & in Covered Moorage Rafters - This has always been an issue at this marina and every other marina. It is clearly stated in the rules that the only thing that should be on finger piers are your boarding steps and that they should only take up half the width of the pier. The marina receives two kinds of complaints regarding this issue. The first complaint is that a neighbor has a bunch of junk on the finger pier and it is making it unsafe for them to transit to their boat. The second complaint is when we ask people to remove stuff from the finger pier. No matter what the marina does in this situation, we are in a lose-lose equation. 90+% of marinas do not allow personal items to be staged on their finger-pier or hung on the covered moorage structure. The rule was created for the following reasons: it is a safety hazard to have items on the finger pier; people tend to trip and fall into the water; when they trip and fall they usually don't blame it on the responsible party; the marina is typically blamed for not forcing tenant X to remove their stuff; once one person puts items out, it spreads like a virus and suddenly the whole marina starts looking like Sanford & Son. Me, personally, I like flowers, which is why we try to hang up the flower baskets and keep adding more flowers each year to the marina. I understand wanting to have them around your boat, I would too. However, this multiplies faster than rabbits on an isolated island. We can't be in the business of deciding who gets to keep what on their finger pier. It isn't fair to you the tenant and it isn't fair to the marina employees. After looking at this issue, we are examining the possibly of putting in some small pea-patches for tenants to plant stuff for themselves next summer. If you are interested, please let us know.

The next section of esplanade has received a grant which means: Construction will start probably next November; New Gangway for docks B-G, New Gates, Key Card system. The City will try to get another grant for the esplanade sections H-dock to M-dock in the following year.

We will not get all of these at once, but we are currently in-process with the Tenant Lounge. We are currently in talks with a contractor regarding the laundry room.

My aim as the General Manager has always been to provide as much as possible for our tenants. As in all cases, I am restricted by the budget, but I am always in your corner fighting for you. I would love it if we could learn to understand each other's obstacles and come together as a team to find workable solutions. I am hoping that the pea-patch could be the beginning of us working together to solve a mutual problem.

Thanks to all the Tenants and Sponsors who supported the 2010 Marina Day Festivities.

We had the BBQ going and the battle for the booty was a rough one. Multiple crews joined in on Booty Bingo and Marina Trivia. Those who earned the most doubloons were able to bid on the prizes at the end of the day. We had great prize list that included: $25 Red Robin Gift Card, $25 Olive Garden Gift Card, $25 Cabelas Card, $25 Barnes & Nobles Card, Folding Deck Chair, Solar Flashlight, Sailing T-shirts, Swiss Army Knife, Toy Story Fishing Pole, Bubble Wands, Wine Glasses, Photo Album, Parallel Ruler, Storm Proof Lighter, Jolly Roger Flag, and a headlamp.

Our very own professional comedian, Morgan Preston, entertained the motley crew with his humor and wit. The crowd was very impressed with his performance. We hope that Morgan will want to participate in another event in the future.

Citizens for a Healthy Bay also brought their new boat up to D-dock for all to view. In addition, they offered spill kits for the boaters on hand.

Put on your best Seafarer's finery and make your presence known at our Marina Day Buccaneer's Bash. That's right mateys, not only do you get to wear your pirate costumes, but you can also sing a chanty or two if you feel like it. We'll have hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, salads, desserts and drinks. Boat Auction - June 4th @ 11:30am

The Foss Harbor Marina will be auctioning off 2 vessels on June 4, 2010 @ 11:30am. These vessels have been impounded due to non-payment.

Vessel owners have until 11am , June 4th , 2010 to pay off the balance of their accounts. It is advisable to call the marina prior to your arrival at the auction to confirm which vessels are still available.

The following vessels are currently eligible for auction:

1. 1978, 27' Bayliner

2. 1964, 27' Fairliner

The Foss Harbor Marina has no knowledge of the actual condition of the vessels. They will be sold as is. The Foss Harbor Marina retains the right of removing a vessel from the auction for any circumstances.

Vessels may be viewed from the exterior only until the week of the auction. Starting Monday, May, 31st, vessels may be boarded with a marina employee present.

Volunteers Needed for the Schooner Rendezvous - April 24th & 25th

Tacoma Waterfont Association is looking for a handful of volunteers to
work at the combined ticket/merchandise/information booth at the
Schooner Rendezvous.

The needed coverage is for shifts from 9:30-2pm and 1:30-6pm. We will
provide parking, snacks and a wrist band to enjoy the event before or
after your shift. Right now I have Sat and Sunday shifts open.

As a way to thank you for your patronage, the Foss Harbor Marina will begin a monthly drawing for a $25 fuel voucher. You will automatically be entered into the drawing as long as your current month's mooorage or locker bill is paid in full by the close of business on the 10th of the month.

We will draw a random winner on the 11th and review their account. If their account is up to date, they will be immediately notified. If an account is not up to date, another tenant account will be drawn until the conditions of the contest are fulfilled.

A Friend Passes

Foss Harbor Marina has lost a great friend and passionate boater. Paul Henning passed away at the Marina early in the morning on Saturday, February 13, 2010. It is evident by the sheer number of people mourning his loss, that he was truly loved by many here at the marina and in the waterway. Many friends here at Foss Harbor describe Paul as not only a friend but as family.
Paul was an expert on Fairliners and was a vintage vehicle aficionado. He moored his boat here for nearly 15 years and was a key member of the Local Fairliner Rendezvous Club. He was instrumental in planning the National Fairliner Rendezvous. He worked at BNSF for many years and then at Boeing. As a member of the IAM Union, he worked as a shop steward and Flight Test Mechanic for Boeing.

His loss will be felt the most by his two sisters Grace and Francis. His friends at the marina will be planning a potluck meal to honor and celebrate Paul’s life. Notice of the exact date of the event will be posted around the marina. There is also talk of erecting a permanent memorial here at the marina in Paul’s honor. If you are interested in the potluck event, donating to the memorial or where to send flowers, please contact the Marina office (253) 272-4404.
We are truly fortunate for the time we have had to get to know Paul. However his loss was unexpected and devastating to his friends. Kathy Mannelly has offered her services as grief counselor to anyone here at the marina who would like someone to talk to confidentially about this event. Her phone number is (253) 279-8063.

The marina is currently looking at raising funds to create a memorial bench for Paul. If you are interested and think this is a good idea, please let us know. The benches are $500 and an 8' x 10' brass plaque is around $300.

Parking Panic

Please remember that there are more parking spots at the south end of the marina. If you let us know, we are more than happy to give you a ride from the south lot to your marina gate.

Also, please keep in mind that we do have more parking than any of the marinas on the waterway.

Passport to Puget Sound

Fifteen Puget Sound Marinas will partner with the Northwest Marine Trade Association to offer a new program that will reward visiting boaters. The promotion, Passport to Puget Sound, will kick off at the 2010 Seattle Boat Show on Jan. 29.

Puget Sound provides quick, easy access to a boater’s paradise. With fishing, diverse moorage options and events year round, the Sound has a lot to offer boaters that want to take advantage of the area’s unique features.

Once a row of four marinas is completed, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, visitors will receive a “Passport to Puget Sound” T-shirt.

The first fifteen participants to achieve a ‘black out’, where all squares are filled with stamps from all of the participating marinas, will receive one of fifteen available grand prize packages valued up to $500. Prize packages include a variety of hotel accommodations, restaurant gift certificates, event tickets, boat services and more.

A Budget Tale

T’was the night before Budget and all through the grounds,
Not a tenant was stirring except the Guard doing rounds.

The stockings were hung by the masts with care,

In hopes that our government would not leave them bare.

The vessels were nestled all snug in their slips,

While their radars monitored the on-going blips.

And I with my flak jacket armed with a Mac,

Had just settled down for a long budget chat.

When out on the dock there rose such a clatter,
The Guard inspected to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I moved like a tug,

Cleared the condensation and then tripped on the rug.

The moon on the bow of the newly purchased yacht,
Gave the luster of mid-day to the boats with the rot.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But an extremely tight budget that forced out a tear.

With a little old income, so stretched and maligned,
I knew in a moment that I should be confined.

More expenses than ever, the budget it grew,

I became dejected, just what would I do?

"Now, Taxes! Now, Leases! Now Insurance and More!

Why all these expenses? I must go to war.”

“Lower the lease rates! Topple the tax wall!
We will fight for our marina ‘til the enemy falls.”

So back to face the drawing board, the manager, I flew,
With a handful of implements for crafting budget stew.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the deck,
It was me with the budget, wringing its neck.

It wasn’t very pleasant and the budget almost drowned,
But when it resurfaced it seemed much, much more sound.

It was dressed all in 2009 moorage rates, from his feet to his head,
But his coversheet was tarnished as if he’d been dead.

A bundle of rates he had on his back,
They were identical to last year, with only one exception to the pack.

The tenants-- how they twinkled! Their dimples how merry!
Their cheeks were like roses, their noses like cherries!

Their mouths were all drawn up in grandiose smiles,
They knew they lucked out, lucked out by a mile.

The stump of a budget still maintained his composure.
Despite the fact, he had more exposure.

And the expenses encircled his head like a wreath,
So the budget bore down and growled his big teeth.

Keeping the same rates would take a large toll,
To keep expenses in check was now his big goal.

He carried the weight of the marina on his frame,
When all of a sudden his face looked crazed & insane.

His eyes were darting all over the place,
When he spotted a marked door and his feet made the chase.

With a wink of his eye and a flush of the head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
Cleaning the marina and smiling a smirk.

And laying his finger outside of his nose,
Stated,” I need some fuel” and pulled out the hose.

He sprang to his boat and opened the cap,
The tank filled in minutes and he gave a loud clap.

And I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"I’ll be back next year and you’d better not bite.”

BOAT AUCTION NOVEMBER 20TH @ 11:30AM

The Foss Harbor Marina will be auctioning off two impounded vessels on November 20, 2009. The vessels eligible for auction are:

We cannot allow boarding of these vessels until the morning of the auction. The Foss Harbor Marina has no knowledge of actual vessel conditions. Please keep in mind, according to the Revised Code of Washington, vessel owners have the right to show up at any time prior to the auction and pay off their balances. Seas ‘N Greetings - A HOLIDAY TRADITION ON THE THEA FOSS

The marinas located along the Thea Foss Waterway in Downtown Tacoma have announced their 4th Annual Holiday Boat Decorating Contest, Seas ‘N Greetings, to be held the evening of December11th. Judging will commence at 4:30pm. Lighted boats will be seen from Foss Harbor Marina down to Dock St. Marina, Delin Docks Marina and Foss Landing.

Vessels will be judged based on their use of lights, their creativity, and their theme. An independent panel of judges will chose an overall Grand Prize Winner for the waterway and 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places for marinas North of the 11th St. Bridge and also for Marinas South of the bridge.

In past years, the contest has awarded thousands of dollars worth in prizes and is anticipating similar prizes will be awarded this year as well. Any decorated vessels moored in the Thea Foss Waterway at Foss Harbor Marina, Dock Street Marina, Delin Docks Marina, or Foss Landing are eligible to participate. This includes boaters who come in for guest moorage. Those who do come in for guest moorage will be treated to the Tacoma Yacht Clubs annual lighted boat parade on the following evening of December 12th.

SEAS ‘N GREETINGS individual boater’s awards will be presented at the Foss Harbor Marina, 821 Dock St. between 7:00-9:00pm. The Marina with the best decorated boat will also be awarded with the Waterway Trophy, which will be held at the winning Marina until the following year when the next event takes place. There will be hot drinks, cookies, and possibly some entertainment from Michael Agostini, a local humorist.

The Waterway Marinas, Foss Waterway Development Authority and local businesses are working jointly to promote this event. All prizes have been donated by community-minded businesses. Bring a toy to donate to Toys-For-Tots and help your personal community spirit. A trip down to see the lights from the masts reflecting off the water is a good way to slow things down for a moment and enjoy the season with your family and friends.

Floating Propane Tank Warning

ONE OF OUR TENANTS WARNS:

I found a propane tank floating in Quartermaster Harbor about two weeks ago, carried it back to Tacoma on our boat (Night Watch) and then drove it to the Tacoma household hazardous waste facility at the landfill. The attendant inspected it and took it but he said there is a better approach.

Essentially the hazardous waste people suggest securing a loose propane tank in the water (with fishing weights as an anchor or w/ a line to a dock) then calling the Department of Ecology or the Coast Guard. Apparently some people who make meth store very dangerous chemicals in tanks normally used for propane and keep the tanks in the water so they stay cool. The haz. waste man said the chemicals used to make meth can become dangerously unstable and may explode if they get warm, hence his direction to leave the tank in the water next time. Ecology has equipment and trained people to dismantle meth labs so they can safely remove the floating container.

All this was complete news to me. I've been on the water for many years and this was the first time I've found a floating propane container so the whole scenario might be pretty unusual but who knows.

My Dad went on a charter fishing trip in Mexico last time he traveled. It went well, he caught a large marlin and had fun. He wanted to bring his fish home, but noone spoke English well enough to understand that he wanted a box to ship the fish home. The funny thing is that we lived in El Cajon for nearly a decade. Cajon is the Spanish word for BOX. That is his "one that got away" and we won't ever let him forget it :~)

The Foss Harbor Marina is taking reservations for 6 new boathouses that will accomodate 40' vessels. These boathouses will be available before the end of the year. Reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis. The boathouses will have lofts and a remote control curtain. The moorage rate will be between $660-$860/month. Esplanade Project

The esplanade construction project, that will affect parking for a bit on the north side of the marina & cause a few parking challenges and make a little noise, will be well worth the inconveniences! The work is scheduled to begin at the beginning of July (for this reason, and because of parking concerns over the 4th of July in past years we will not be giving guest parking permits during this holiday- please have your guests park in the republic lot on the south side of the Murray Morgan Bridge) we will keep you updated on the expected completion date and any changes to that plan in the monthly newsletter and on this blog.

It will be worth the small problems to have a boardwalk-type esplanade with shopping choices and other new ammenities. Please be patient with the intermediate stages because the end result will happen quicker than you think :)

The reality TV show “America’s Got Talent” is coming to Tacoma people. Well, according to their press release they are coming to Seattle, but the auditions are actually at the Tacoma Convention Center. G-10
What is “America’s Got Talent”?
Each week, the show features a colorful array of hopeful stars, including singers, dancers, comedians, contortionists, impressionists, jugglers, magicians and ventriloquists, all vying for their chance to strut and perform on stage in front of a panel of celebrity judges in the hopes they’ll be chosen a winner by the viewing audience.
Expect hoards of frantic fame seeking talented people to flood our town April 25-26. Especially when everyone finds S-11 out that new host Nick Cannon will be there.

There are several state parks slated for permanent closure &/or "temporary closure" this legislative season as a measure to meet budgetary concerns. They are not being closed due to a lack of use or interest; they are busy parks that are being closed to keep a budget. A partial list of parks slated for closure are: Fort Casey, Larrabee, Millersylvania, Peace Arch, Flaming Geyser, Rainbow Falls, Potlatch & several others. S.A.D. or Seasonal Affective Disorder can touch so many aspects of our Pacific Northwest experiences, but is your boat suffering from this condition? Read on and find out.

If your lines are so worn they wouldn't hold a bird if it landed on them, your boat may have S.A.D.
If your boat is still decorated for Christmas, or for that matter, Halloween, your boat may have S.A.D.
If you've tarped it off for so long you forgot the color, your boat is probably suffering the effects of S.A.D.
If your cabin is as damp as the outside hull, if the weeds growing off the bottom are taller than the mast, if the pirate on your flag has surrendered, your boat may be one of those with S.A.D.

Come check-out your boat and make sure it is still the happy place you spend your spare time in the warm weather. Don't let something that makes you HAPPY become S.A.D.

The Guerra's boat took first place again this year, Congratulations Larry and Michelle! Murry Morgan Bridge's Foot Traffic

There have been rumors about the city closing the Murry Morgan Bridge to foot traffic. The bridge has been closed to vehicles, even emergency vehicles, for over a year and now more changes are afoot. Current volume estimations claim the stairs on the bridge are used only 40 times per day (I think that estimate is low). Do you use the bridge to go into downtown Tacoma? How often? How much impact would it cause to close this route?

Tall Ships Countdown: 3 Months

Get Ready because here they come. The Tall Ships will arrive in three months. We are currently working with the Tall Ships committees to try and bring an even more exciting event to the Marina than in 2005. Here are some of the changes:

The esplanade will be decorated with Tall Ships banners and flags.
Booths will be located on the esplanade - primarily dedicated to local non-profit groups.
The hoist deck will serve as a food vendor area with picnic tables to sit down and view the activities in the waterway.
Public outhouses on site. This will help keep the general public out of the marina restrooms.

Obviously, there will be a lot of activity on marina property . We definitely recommend carpooling to this event. So when making your upcoming plans for Tall Ships 2008, please plan accordingly.

Daffodil Boat Parade Hits the Thea Foss Waterway This Year!!!

April 20th, 2008 the Daffodil Marine Regatta will head down the Thea Foss Waterway. Have your picnic baskets stocked by noon so you can sit back in your front row seat and watch the parade cruise by.

The tradition of the Marine Parade began 56 years ago, when, at the conclusion of the Daffodil Parade, the flowers were removed from parade floats and vehicles and taken to the Yacht Club. Yacht Club members would decorate their vessels & boats with the daffodils and parade up and down the Ruston Way waterfront. The tradition has grown into one of the largest marine parades in the Pacific Northwest.

The Tacoma Yacht Club will host more than 160 guest boats for the Marine Regatta and Parade. Yacht Club activities will commence on Friday with the conclusion of their regatta ending with the marine parade.

Participants in the event will see the Secrets of the Museum, which includes an hour-long introduction to the programs of the Museum of Glass (like their urban youth program that has a powerful impact on the lives of local children) and a sneak peek at the 'Hot Shop' where the glassblowing actually takes place.

Life aboard the Brig Lady Washington

My mind is aglow with a plethora of poetic expression resulting from my recent voyage aboard the Lady Washington. From the moment I donned the period garb, lovingly referred to as "funnies," I felt myself being transported back in time when 18th century explorers were discovering the west coast of America. From the staged cannon battles against the Hawaiian Chieftain to handling the halyards and sheets, and bracing the yardarms, my senses were tingling as I began to experience the life of a Tall Ship sailor.

When in the seaway, the Lady creaked and groaned plying through the wind tossed waves as any wooden ship of sail would have in the days of old. We had one advantage that our 18th century ancestors did not – the use of an 871 Detroit diesel to get us through the contrary winds and tides. Crossing the Westport and Columbia bars seemed less difficult than it must have been for Robert Gray and the likes of earlier explorers. They had no engine and were at the mercy of wind and tide with only their sail handling experience and determination to rely upon.

Being made a watch commander with an assigned crew was a pleasant surprise and benefit I did not expect. My crewmembers were responsive and reliable – though young; they appeared fearless in the gale force winds willing to take on any task necessary to keep our ship safe and seaworthy. Watching them go aloft up on the ratlines to the main t’gallant in heavy seas to retie a gasket or to the main topsail to secure her loosened yardarm and make fast was impressive indeed.

Though the Lady performed well in light breezes and stormy gales, in a seaway her main decks were awash much of the time for that is the nature of her design. The continual dousing of salty wave and spray is good for her wooden hull and decks. The saltwater helps to preserve her wooden construction and keeps the planking on her deck and bulwarks tight.

The numerous whale and dolphin sightings were an added treat for all and comforting to the crew after a few days out. The immense size and grandeur of the Pacific Ocean tends to humble oneself when upon her waters. When you think about our planet being ¾’s covered by Sea and Ocean and you reflect upon her enormous depths a man tends to shrink into obscurity feeling not much larger than an ant in a world of human giants. Vast, unmeasurable, boundless and free is she the mighty Pacific.

The Lady in all her glory is surely a ship to fall in love with. Her traditional rig and design sets the stage for an early American romance novel. Even the Captains, each of a particular creed and breed make the adventure aboard a Tall ship more surreal. For me, this voyage was in part the fulfillment of a childhood dream and one I intend – God willing – to repeat, perhaps one day as her future Captain. She's a fine ship indeed!

Marina Boat Hoist - Leaving Soon

The marina boat hoist will soon be dismantled. We expect this to happen in late November/early December. We know many of you will miss this piece of equipment and apologize if this seems sudden.

The removal of the hoist was one of the stated conditions when the property was purchased. We have always told everyone that this equipment would have to be removed eventually. The timing is now right for this project and thus we are forging ahead.

In the near future, the City plans to construct a new esplanade/public walkway that will run parallel to the waterline and over the current hoist deck.

This blog site will be updated as we find out more information. If you do need to use the hoist, please come in as soon as possible.

Boat Trailer Found!!!!

2nd Annual Boat Decorating Contest Announced for December 6th!!!

BEGINNING A HOLIDAY TRADITION ON THE THEA FOSS

The marinas located along the Thea Foss Waterway in Downtown Tacoma have announced the 2nd Annual Holiday Boat Decorating Contest to be held from 4:30pm to 6:30pm the evening of December 6th. Lighted boats will be seen from Foss Harbor Marina down to Dock St. Marina and Foss Landing.

Vessels will be judged based on their use of lights, their creativity, and their theme. An independent panel of judges will chose an overall Grand Prize Winner for the waterway and 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places for marinas North of the 11th St. Bridge and also for Marinas South of the bridge. A variety of prizes will be awarded. Sponsors for the event include West Marine, the Harmon, Johnny’s Dock, Indochine, Commencement Bay Services, Foss Waterway Management and Foss Harbor.

“We are encouraging vessel participation in all of the marinas around the waterway,” said the Foss Harbor Marina General Manager, Tracy McKendry. “Not only will it be fun, but there will be great prizes. It always feels very festive to me to walk along the water at night and see all the holiday lights reflecting off of the water. “

The Glass Museum is looking at having a bon fire. Cutter's Point Coffee will be providing hot drinks. Winners will be announced after 6:30 pm at the Glass Museum. All decorated vessels will be eligible to win prizes from a drawing that will be held after the winners are announced.
Prizes include: Full Set of Foul Weather Gear, Free Month of Moorage, Dinner Certificates, Coffee Cards, and much more.

Visitors and Participants will be encouraged to bring canned foods for the Fish Food Banks and toy for the Toys for Tots campaign. Collection bins will be available at the site.

Caroling will be encouraged!!!

Boat Trailer Stolen

Last Thursday night or Friday morning(11/1-11/2) a Triple Axle Trailer was stolen from the fenced yard on the Municipal Dock Site. This trailer bears the license plate 9160TI. It is a 2006 Quality-Built Trailer that is approximately 30-32' long and black in color. If anyone saw anything suspicious during that time period or saw the trailer leaving, please contact the Marina immediately @ 253-272-4404. We appreciate any help you can give in this matter.

Late Fee Increase and Impound Policy Change

In an effort to stem the wave of late payments the marina has been receiving, we are changing our late fees and impound policies. This will be effective November 1, 2008. Late fees will increase to $25. You will still have a grace period from the 1st of the month until the 10th of the month. Late fees will be issued as always on the 11th of the month. However, all vessels are now subject to impoundment if payments are not received by the 15th of the month in which they are due. Please communicate with us if you have any special issues regarding payments. We want to try and work with you whenever possible. Hopefully together, we can stop this growing problem.

Eagle and her crew will arrive back home, concluding their 2008 summer training program approximately Sept. 26-28. Any updates to the schedule, including an exact return date for the Barque Eagle to New London, will be announced by the Coast Guard Academy Public Affairs Office C-18 or by the Barque Eagle.

Eagle, the only square-rigged sailing ship in United States government service, was originally commissioned the Horst Wessel in 1936 by Germany and was used as one of three training ships operated by Nazi Germany to train navy cadets. Taken as a war prize by the United States in 1946 and renamed, the Eagle now allows the Coast Guard’s future officers to apply the navigation, engineering, and leadership training they receive in classes at the Academy to real-life challenges on the sea.
